Endless Blue Matte Flakies

Sinful Colors Endless Blue with Matte Flakies

I have one more manicure for my nubbins series. I loved this one so much I couldn't choose just one photo. It deserved its own post. Mattifying flakies does something magical. I don't know if it's the background color or the matte top coat, but these pictures really captured the orange to green shift.

Sinful Colors Endless Blue with Matte Flakies

This is two coats of Sinful Colors, Endless Blue with 2 coats of Color Club, Snow Flakes. This flakey polish is very similar to Essie, Shine of the Times and Finger Paints, Flashy which doesn't help anyone at all, because I think all three of these are now discontinued. Ugh.. flakies, I love you so much! Why do you have to be so hard to find? I finished it all off with a coat of Wet n Wild Matte Top Coat. This is one of those manicures I could wear over and over. I'm so addicted to the bright colors and shift.

What Nubbins Need

Nubbins Short Nails- Broken Nail with Rainbow and Galaxy

Yesterday was my two year bloggaversary. I'm not really great about celebrating these things and I almost thought about putting together something a little more special for the occasion, but looking back at the nubbin-rific, poorly cleaned-up atrocities that were my first posts this is totally fitting.

Over the summer I had a pretty bad break on my middle finger. I wouldn't say I was devastated, but "pretty sad" might accurately describe my feelings. The first and only thing I could do was paint a jokey rainbow and galaxy manicure entitled "Sad Day" with an arrow pointing to the worst part of the breakage.

Nubbins- NYC Manhattan Swatch

I've collected all my nubbins pictures here in one post, because nubbins need love too after all. I definitely wasn't going to stop painting my nails waiting for them to grow out. I have nothing against nubbins in general. It's just that I've kept my nails long for such a long time that I'm used to that look on myself so anything else feels weird. The other thing I think nubbins need is dark colors. The bolder shades help my little nails stand out more.

Above I've swatched two coats of NYC, Manhattan. It's a rich plum hued vampy polish that had a decent formula without too much bleeding into the cuticles. That's my pet peeve with this type of shade- it can be a pain to clean up. I like the formula better on this polish than I do a very similar OPI that I have in my collection. Yay for the budget polish!

Below I have black nails with a some different kinds of flakies. I used LA Colors, Broken Hearted which has the bigger shards and small holographic glitter. I also threw on some Finger Paints flakies from the Kaleidoscope Collection. Sorry, I can't remember which one exactly- probably Abstract Attraction. I think I see a hint of purple in some of the flakey bits.

Nubbins- Finger Paint Flakies, LA Colors Broken Hearted

For my last nubicure I tried the Quatrefoil technique following this tutorial by CristabellNails. It's really hard to get everything spaced out correctly! I'm sure it didn't help that my nubby nail was significantly shorter than the others. I love the look of this though. I really should try it again now that my nails are all the same length again. I used Essie, Chinchilly for the base and Ulta, Moody Blues for my accents.

It didn't take too long at all to get back to normal. A lot of the intermediate length nails already got posted so now I'm back to super long like magic. I've been posting a ton of stuff out of order this year. Sorry (not sorry)! At the two year mark I can look back and say I almost always post what I want, when I want and that keeps me happy. I really enjoy this little blog and don't want to burn out.

Thank you so much to all of you who have stayed with me and helped to share my nail obsession! I've made some really great friends and been enabled to buy more pretties than I know what to do with sometimes. Here's to another year of whatever shaped nails happen to come my way.

Pantone Color of the Year 2015: Marsala

Pantone Color of the Year 2015 Marsala- Wet n Wild Haze of Love and Mentality 24k Gold

Now that Christmas is officially over and done with lets all rush on to the next big thing: New Years! One of my favorite things of the new year is Pantone's choosing of Color of the Year. I've been obsessed with color ever since I was old enough to discover the beautiful world of Rainbow Bright. As a kid my parents always had to wrestle me away from the paint chips at the hardware store.. no, apparently those weren't there for me to take one of each every time we went down that aisle.

This year's color is Marsala- a rich earthy red wine shade. I immediately thought of Haze of Love by Wet n Wild. The color looks very Marsala in the bottle, but on the nail it tends to darken up unless viewing in bright light. Still, an excellent option for the price. If you'd like to read more about this color and how it was chosen check out the Pantone site.

I paired my Marsala with gold for a luxurious look. I used OPI's Love.Angel.Music.Baby for the gold nails, topped with loose glitter from Born Pretty placed in triangle shapes on the pinkie and index fingers. On my other accent nails I used 24k Gold from Mentality which is real gold leaf flakes in a clear base. I used a toothpick to fish out and place bigger chunks of gold leaf for more dense coverage.

So far I've heard really mixed feelings about the color for 2015. I happen to be leaning firmly into the love it camp. How do you feel about this one?

Bah & Humbug

Bah! Humbug! I'm not quite Grinch status yet, but Christmas makes me crazy! I'm decidedly not a Christmas person. I really really hate Christmas music. I hate the crowds at the stores. I don't even like egg nog that much and I'm allergic to Christmas trees. You see how this whole holiday isn't working out too well for me? I'd be more than happy just to skip ahead to the day after when everything is calm. I've painted some nails to capture the anti-Christmas sentiment that I always end up feeling this time of year.

It's not all bad though. I am looking forward to spending some time with my family and eating a ton of delicious food. A holiday that requires this much baking can't be all bad.

For my matte nails I've used OPI, 4 In The Morning (a matte polish from the Gwen Stefani collection). I used acrylic paint for the lettering and topped it off with Wet n Wild Matte Top Coat. The purple nails are one coat of China Glaze, Queen B and two coats of Milani, Totally Cool.

Lana Del Rey Inspired (Slightly Christmasy) Nails

Lana Del Rey Inspired Red and Gold French Tips Pointy Nails

Lana Del Rey Nails
Originally from Vogue? Who know.. the internet is a complicated place full of borrowed pics.
I have a story about these! I did them over the summer when my nails were particularly long. I was going through a period of Lana obsession (it happens every now and then) so I filed my nails bit pointy-er than normal. They're definitely not as pointy or as long and Lana's but they're my real nails which have a very real threshold for how long they'll allow themselves to be. In case you were wondering this is about a week over that threshold. I got a little tear in the corner of one while wearing this and despite several patch attempts I ended up having to cut them down soon after. Not to worry, they've fully recovered and are dangerously close to being too long again.

These aren't exactly Christmas related, but this seemed like a good time to post them since red and gold can be very festive during the holidays.

Lana Del Rey Inspired Red and Gold French Tips Pointy Nails

I started with basecoat then used Maybelline, Bold Gold to paint the tips gold. I used the bottle from the brush and free-handed the diagonals. I went back over the tips with red polish leaving a stripe of gold showing. I don't even know what red this is anymore (that's what I get for waiting so long to post things). If I had to guess I'd say Red Red from Wet n Wild. This is pretty easy to do free hand if you're just starting out with nail art, but tape could also help with crisper lines.

I love Lana's vintage nail style and of course the shape even though I can't pull off something quite that extreme myself. Do you have any favorite celebrity nails?

Pastel Gradient & Holo Birthday Nails

Pastel Gradient Ombre Milani 3D Holographic HD

Pastel Gradient Ombre Milani 3D Holographic HD

Happy Birthday to me today! I can't believe I'm 32 already. When I was a kid I totally thought I'd have this life stuff figured out by now. At least one thing is turning out well- I always have awesome nails. If I could only get one thing about adulthood right I'm glad it's this.

For my birthday I wanted to paint something that would make me happy. Screw you holidays, I'm taking a break to do these very spring-like pastel gradient nails, and because I'm lazy and didn't want to work too hard on my birthday here are also some holo nails.

Pastel Gradient Ombre Milani 3D Holographic HD

This holo polish is Milani 3D Holographic- HD. The pictures I took in my light box with my fancy camera don't really show off the holo to its full potential. The picture above was taken in my kitchen with the stove as the background using my iPhone camera. Who would have guessed it'd be the most holo-tastic picture? HD is a scattered holo with chunky (but very smooth) particles in a clear base. It looks gold and silver at the same time depending on the light and angle. This is probably the most unique holo polish I own. It took 4 coats to build it up, but it has an awesome depth and rainbows that you can see much better in person than I was able to capture on film.

For my gradient I used Sinful Colors- Candy Coated (lavender), Spoiled- Mar-zi-panna (blue), and Ulta- Mint Condition. I started with two coats of Mar-zi-panna and then brushed all three colors onto a makeup sponge and rolled it over the nail to create the gradient.

Victoria's Secret Pastel Ombre Maxi Dress

This dress from Victoria's Secret was my gradient inspiration. I saw it over the summer and it was way too expensive to risk ordering it and then looking exactly 0% like a VS model in it. But guess what?? If I ever change my mind I can still order it on eBay. Only $80-$200 depending on the listing! I think I'll stick to wearing it on my nails only.

Minx vs Jamberry vs Polish: The Ultimate Showdown

I recently tried out some Minx nail wraps. Each set comes with two strips of 8 wraps in different sizes so I had a few left over and thought it was the perfect opportunity to do a wear test and compare them to some Jamberry samples I've been hoarding for way too long. I've been really curious about the claims that these wraps can last up to two weeks. I put it to the test so you all can see how they compare. I only made it a week (that's a really long time for me to wear the same nails!) but I think that was long enough for testing purposes. I've also polished some nails with regular polish for the comparison.

Since my Minx wraps were definitely Christmas-y I tried to pick out the most festive of my Jamberrys to go along with it. I've duplicated the designs to the very best of my ability for the polished nails- meaning yeah, it's kind of half-assed. I painted my right hand with my left hand so the lines are a bit shaky and I didn't get the detail I might have the other way around. Also worth noting, in the excitement of new nail wraps I forgot to apply my usual base coat on the polished nails which probably increased the wear factor a bit for those.

Application:
Minx wins for: being thinner and more flexible. It was much easier to flatten out the wrinkes. My Jamberry had a huge gap at the top that no amount of heating or smoothing would get rid of.
Polish wins for: having no wrinkles at all and being generally easier to apply. I'm much more used to applying polish so even with the drying time, which is minimal with fast dry topcoat, I find it to be more relaxing and less of a hassle to apply than either of the wraps.

Wear:
Minx wins for: complexity of design and finish. The shiny finish held up all week where polish got scratched, chipped and dulled over time.
Jamberry wins for: being most resistant to tip wear. As you can see that giant gap is still at the top of the nail, but to its credit it didn't start to peel off. The stiffness that bothered me during application was actually a credit to the wear factor. The stiffer material didn't wear as badly at the tips and was less sticky than the Minx which tended to catch on fabrics.
Polish wins for: ease of removal. When the week was all over with the polish wiped off easily with some acetone while I had to do an oil soak and gingerly peel up the nail wraps. Removing the wraps ultimately led to some damage of my nail surface despite my extra care and gentleness.

My final thoughts- while there are some definite benefits to the wraps, I just don't find the process to be as relaxing or enjoyable as painting my nails with regular polish. Plus the tip wear was pretty comparable in Minx vs polish. It's not quite compelling enough for me to spend a ton of money on wraps when I have so many bottles of polish already. They're a fun change from the norm, but it's too late for me. I'm already too far down the polish hole to make wraps a regular thing in my nail routine.

What are you thoughts on nail wraps? Have you had a different/better experience? If so I'd love to hear your tips!

Something Different

Franken polish bottle shot mixing polish

I've been busy frankening some polishes to give as Christmas gifts. This bottle looked so interesting as I was mixing that I couldn't resist taking some pictures. And also because it's Christmas and I'm frankening I absolutely must find a way to work in a Franken-sense pun.

Usually I start with a colored polish, but I started this bottle about half full of top coat. The other polishes were heavier and sank giving it this neat lava lamp effect.

The glitter polish above globbed up and didn't spread out like the blue and black did.

Below I've added some Fantasy Makers Confetti (holo glitter) which just sat on top of the polish until I shook it all up. I mixed in a few more things after the glitter, but I won't show the finished product and spoil the surprise since Christmas is still coming.

Minx Nails Review- Ribbon Candy

Minx Nails Ribbon Candy Holiday Design

Minx Nails Ribbon Candy Holiday Design

Candy cane nails! I guess this means it's officially Christmas time. Recently in one of the Facebook groups I frequent, Krystal of Polish Galore, was offering the chance to try some Minx nail wraps through Beauty Collection. I have very mixed feelings about the nail wraps I've tried in the past, but this was Minx. These wraps have quickly become a celebrity favorite, and seem to have a great reputation. My Minx arrived in the cutest packaging ever and I was excited to try them out. Read on for my full review.

Orly Sweet Peacock Swatch

Orly Sweet Peacock Swatch

I'm sitting here staring at this picture trying to come up with words to write here and the only thing I can think is.. bluuueeeeeeee. To be fair I'm only about 3/4 over the most horrible cold I've ever gotten (at least until the next time I get sick). My brain isn't working so good. Desperate for help I asked my dear husband what this color makes him think of. "Nothing. Why? Is this a trick question?" he says. Sooo helpful. But it gave me something to write about so it actually did help. This cat is a good representation of how I feel today.

Orly Sweet Peacock Swatch

Orly's Sweet Peacock is a beautiful and bright, blue foil. Jewel tones always feel festive to me so I'm going to pretend like I totally planned this for the upcoming holidays and didn't at all pull it out of my file of unposted archives. I've got on two coats plus top coat. The formula was very nice as I've come to expect from Orly. I'm not usually a fan of blue, but this polish won me over with it's shine and slightly sparkly shimmer.

Snips and Snails

China Glaze All Aboard Collection Don't Get Derailed

Don't Get Derailed from the China Glaze All Aboard collection is the most delightfully sludgy color I've ever owned. It's a dark olive green cream with great coverage. I painted on one coat and it was so opaque I didn't even bother doing a second coat. How often do you find a true one coater?

This color is so different from anything else I have that I wanted to find a unique prop to do it justice. My little snail friend was shy at first, but apparently you can add snail whispering to my list of talents. I convinced him to come out and say hi to everyone and show off how he's the perfect color match to this polish.

Just to be safe should I say no snails were harmed in the making of this post? He's pretty darn cute too don't you think? I put him back into the grass clipping pile where I found him when we were done hanging out.

Because It's Not Cold Yet

Revlon Brilliant Strength Captivate Swatch Fall Manicure

I know a lot of the country is buried under a blanket of snow, but here in CA it's way too hot for this time of year. It's been in the 70's all week. Since it doesn't feel very wintery (and since I didn't get this posted yesterday) I'm going to sneak in one last fall manicure before the onslaught of Christmas nails. This shade from the Revlon Brilliant Strength line is called Captivate. It's a really glow-y burnt orange metallic color.

Revlon Brilliant Strength Captivate Swatch Fall Manicure

I'm wearing two coats here. The formula was easy to work with. Also, I swear it smells a little like green apple Jolly Ranchers, but my husband insists I'm going crazy. I just checked it again right now, and yeah, definitely has a different scent than the typical polish smell.

I tried out Nail Vinyls for the first time to create some fall nail art and I loved them. I've tried in the past to go cheap with scotch tape and pinking shears, but these are infinitely easier to work with. I made random splotches of color over my orange base and added a layer of top coat to help it dry faster. Once the polish was dry I applied the vinyls one finger at a time and painted over with Seeing Red by China Glaze from The Giver Collection. I immediately pulled up the vinyls while the polish was still wet to prevent any pulling or sticking. I waited a bit for the red to dry partially so I wouldn't get any streaking and then finished up with more top coat to smooth it all out. This is such a quick and easy way to create interesting looking nails. I ordered a combo pack of vinyls and I can't wait to try out the other shapes.

Black Friday Polish Sales- Retail Edition

I'm always looking for great sales, so what better time than Black Friday to get some polish deals along with the rest of your Christmas shopping. I've put together this retail shopping guide with all the polish related deals I could find. Most of the sales are are sets which seems typical for this time of year. These would make great presents for someone just starting a collection or maybe a little something for yourself.

I pulled ads from the retailer's own site when available, and the rest I looked up on blackfriday.com. I've tried to be as accurate as possible, but of course check your local ads to confirm sale dates and to make sure these deals are running in your area.

Big Box Stores

Target - $8 for e.l.f. lips, eyes or nails sets. This sale is running Nov 27-29.

Walmart - $9.88 for assorted beauty sets starting at 6 am on Friday. It's a little hard to see from the picture exactly what's included, but the Walmart website says it's 30% off the regular price of their assorted sets.

Kmart - 56 pages of Black Friday ads and finally on page 55 I find the only nail related item. See how hard I'm working to find you the deals? Here you have a free Kiss LED Gel Lamp when you buy the Kiss Everlasting Gel Polish starter kit which appears to be selling for $29.99. I know I was curious about this so I went right over to Amazon to look at reviews. 5 out of 5 people seem to like it. Hmm.. I might have to check this one out myself. This is part of the 3 day sale going on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Drug Stores

Rite Aid - No polishes at all in Rite Aid's Black Friday ad, but but they do have some standard weekly sales (Nov 23-29) I might as well mention.

Sally Hansen- Buy one get one 50% off

Revlon ColorStay- Buy one get one 50% off

Walgreens - Just one nail polish item here- $4 Sally Hansen top coats. These usually retail for $5.99 so this is a good time to stock up if this is one of your favorites. Three day sale: Thursday - Saturday.

CVS - Revlon polish for $4.99 and Wet n Wild sets for $3.88. The WnW looks like it's minis, but it's so hard to tell in this picture. Thursday - Saturday.

Beauty Stores

Ulta, unsurprisingly, has quite a few nail polish sales going on this week. The regular weekly sales aren't bad, but they have some great Black Friday deals as well.

Sally Beauty Supply - A few polish deals to be had here too. I couldn't find a specific Black Friday ad. It seems they're just continuing their ThanksGifting Event sale that's been going on throughout November where you get a free gift with a qualifying purchase.

$14.99 OPI kit- comes with 2 cosmetics bags and two polishes. There's also a $13.99 option that comes with 2 polishes and a free scarf.

$12.99 Finger Paints LE Patent Leather Manicure Kit- two colors plus a top coat

Free phone wallet wristlet ($9.99 value) when you buy two Finger Paints polishes

Free Orly polish remover when you buy any 1 Orly polish

China Glaze deals- Buy 2 get one free entire stock
Free coin purse/mirror with the purchase of holiday gift sets at $12.99 each

Let me know if I've missed your favorite store and feel free to post any great sales you've found in the comments. Happy shopping!
